Most people ask for a kitchen quote by size and finish. That is only one part of the decision. The kitchen should first be divided into use zones. This also makes the modular kitchen cost easier to understand.
Cooking zone
The hob area needs space for pots, pans, spices, oils and cooking tools. Deep drawers below the hob are often more useful than fixed shelves because they bring heavy items forward instead of forcing you to bend and search.
Washing and sink zone
The sink base should allow plumbing access, cleaning supplies, waste bins and service clearance. Do not overfill this area with fixed storage that blocks repair work. A clean sink base is a maintenance decision as much as a storage decision.
Pantry and tall unit
A tall pantry can store dry groceries, containers and low-use appliances. It is useful when the kitchen has enough width and a clear access path. If the kitchen is compact, a slimmer pantry section may work better than one oversized unit.
Corner storage
Corners are where kitchens often waste space. A corner does not always need expensive hardware, but it needs a clear decision. Use it for larger low-use items, corner accessories or a planned blind corner so items do not disappear.
Appliance garage and charging zone
Mixers, air fryers, coffee machines and chargers should not permanently crowd the counter. If you use these daily, plan a dedicated appliance area with plug points, ventilation and enough clearance.
Before finalizing the kitchen, write down what sits on your counter today. Those items usually reveal the storage zones that are missing.
Simple kitchen zone checklist
- Daily cooking: hob drawers, spices, oils, utensils and pans.
- Prep: open counter space near chopping and mixing activities.
- Washing: sink base, bin, cleaning supplies and plumbing access.
- Pantry: dry groceries, jars, backup stock and tall storage.
- Appliances: microwave, mixer, air fryer, water purifier and charging points.
- Low-use storage: large vessels, seasonal cookware and party serveware.
Storage zones affect budget
Drawers, pull-outs, tall units and premium hardware can change the quote. Spend first on zones used daily. Decorative upgrades can come after the base storage logic is correct. For finish decisions, compare laminate, acrylic and veneer.
